Music Therapy vs. Music Education
What’s the difference between music therapy and regular music lessons? How do I know if music therapy is right for my child?
Develop Skills
Music therapy uses music as a tool to help individuals develop skills they need, such as social interaction or attention, through a structured plan tailored to their abilities after an assessment. On the other hand, learning music focuses on understanding and practicing music as an art form.
Person-centered.
Compared to learning music, music therapy is more person-centered. Therapists design different types of music experiences based on the goals set for the individual. These experiences may include singing, music movement, improvisation, composition, and more.
Resonate with individual
Since music is non-invasive and non-threatening, and most people enjoy music, we believe that as long as a therapist can find the type of music that resonates with an individual, create a positive therapeutic environment, and build a strong therapeutic relationship, music therapy can be suitable for most people who have specific needs.
Change through music
If a child has difficulty concentrating but becomes calmer and more focused when listening to music.
Or if a child struggles with social interactions or verbal communication but starts to sing along or repeat phrases from songs after listening to music.
